    Sony RX0 II Camera Trap

The customer wanted a trap built around the new Sony RX0 II. The new model records 4K to the 256gb micro SD card. He wanted to shoot motion activated video and take a picture every 15 minutes during the day. And the ability to use a wireless PIR or active IR motion sensor. He also wanted to trigger wireless remote LED flood lights. I haven't built the lights yet so this test is day only.

The housing is a security camera housing available in many sizes on the Chinese market. This one has aluminum bottom tray and top cover and plastic front and rear. The hood should help prevent some of the morning dew from sitting on the glass. Power is provided by two rechargeable 18650 batteries and a small flexible solar panel on the top. The controller draws about 7uA when waiting to do something and the solar panel puts out 4.8vdc at 120mA. So this should give the trap a little more time in the field. Hopefully between the two 18650 batteries and the solar panel, it will be able to fill the 256gb card.

One thing I really like about the new RX0 is the tilt up display. It makes it really easy to compose the shot and change menu settings while the camera is in the housing.

For the next few days the trap is set to capture 4K video and take jpg/RAW stills every 15 minutes.

Most morning there is a row of ducks lined up on a log in front of the camera. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Here are a few still images from the camera.

I guess the nice feature of taking a picture at a regular interval is you see things that the motion sensor probably would not have picked up. These two ducks are about 50" away from the sensor.

Here are a couple videos from the RX0 II. The video was recorded at 4K 60 fps.

Another RX0 camera trap out for testing. The RX0 and RX0 II are one of the more popular builds right now. The small size plus the ability to stay in the field for an extended time really make it attractive. This one uses two 26650 rechargeable batteries that will easily enable the camera to fill the 256gb card with still images or video. The small box above the camera housing is a wireless PIR.

That is one awesome rig. Compact and quality is over the top...... You did a great job on the build. Gotta like the ram mounts for supporting cameras, lights and about anything you want varying angles with ..................................................

Here is another 4K video from a Sony RX0 II camera trap. The trap was set for day only and recording 15 second videos. There are two wireless motion sensors on the large tree to the right of the pond. One pointed back towards the camera and one pointed in the opposite direction.

That's a top notch set up Jeff. So compact and great quality build. The quality of the recordings are equally impressive. Nice work.

This is amazing. Do you still build / sell these? I have an RXOII begging to be used more. PM sent
