Standby on Nikon SB28

When in standby mode with the Nikon SB28, the display reads out "STBY". Does anyone know if there is a way to turn this display off? Not sure how much battery this takes but I assume it requires some amount of power.

The STBY icon does not take much power. I have had batteries in a SB28 for many months and the flash still fired up.
